Camerata Chicago is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003 by conductor and violinist Drostan Hall. The ensemble is based in Chicago, Illinois, and is known for its high-quality performances of classical music. Drostan Hall, who was born in Scotland, studied music at the Royal College of Music in London and later at the Juilliard School in New York. He has performed with many prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. In 2003, he decided to form his own ensemble, which he named Camerata Chicago. The ensemble's main members are all highly skilled musicians who have performed with major orchestras around the world. They include violinists Mathias Tacke, Stefan Hersh, and Amelia Piscitelli; violist Rose Armbrust Griffin; cellist Christopher Ferrer; and bassist Calum Cook. Camerata Chicago has performed at many prestigious venues, including the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Chicago, the Ravinia Festival, and the Chicago Cultural Center. The ensemble has also toured internationally, performing in Europe and Asia. One of the highlights of Camerata Chicago's career was its performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony. The ensemble was invited to perform with the British rock band Coldplay, and they played a medley of the band's hit songs "Paradise" and "Viva la Vida." The performance was widely praised and helped to raise the profile of the ensemble. Camerata Chicago has also won several awards for its performances. In 2010, the ensemble won the prestigious American Prize in Chamber Music Performance, and in 2012, they were named the Best Chamber Ensemble by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. In addition to its performances, Camerata Chicago is also committed to music education. The ensemble regularly performs for school groups and offers masterclasses for young musicians. They also have a program called "Bach to School," which brings classical music into elementary schools.
