Born in 1976 in Ottawa, Canada, Hopkins grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He studied at the University of Ottawa and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia before embarking on a successful career as an opera singer. Hopkins made his professional debut in 2003 as Marcello in La bohème with the Canadian Opera Company. Since then, he has performed with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Paris Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera. He has also appeared in concert with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. One of Hopkins' most notable performances was his portrayal of Papageno in Mozart's The Magic Flute at the Metropolitan Opera in 2017. The New York Times praised his "winningly comic" performance and noted that he "sang with a warm, rich tone and a keen sense of phrasing." Hopkins has also received critical acclaim for his performances in other Mozart operas, including Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte.
