From a young age, Porteous showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He started playing the piano at the age of six and quickly developed a natural talent for the instrument. Porteous attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Peter Evans. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1972 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Royal College of Music in London. There, he studied with the legendary pianist, John Lill, and graduated with distinction in 1974. Porteous began his professional career as a concert pianist in 1975, and his talent quickly caught the attention of music critics and audiences alike. He was praised for his technical skill, musicality, and ability to convey emotion through his playing. He performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe, and his performances were always well-received. One of the highlights of Porteous's career was his performance at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1982. He played Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111, and received a standing ovation from the audience.
