Ensemble Offspring is a contemporary classical music ensemble based in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 1995 by percussionist Claire Edwardes and flutist Lamorna Nightingale, the ensemble has become one of Australia's leading proponents of new music, performing works by both established and emerging composers. The ensemble's core members include Claire Edwardes on percussion, Lamorna Nightingale on flute, Jason Noble on clarinet, and Zubin Kanga on piano. Over the years, the ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of guest artists, including vocalists, string players, and electronic musicians. Ensemble Offspring's repertoire is diverse and eclectic, encompassing everything from contemporary classical music to experimental sound art. The ensemble is particularly known for its commitment to commissioning new works, with over 200 pieces written specifically for the group to date. One of the ensemble's early highlights was its performance at the 1996 Adelaide Festival, where it premiered works by Australian composers Ross Edwards and Peter Sculthorpe. Since then, Ensemble Offspring has gone on to perform at major festivals and venues throughout Australia and internationally, including the Sydney Opera House, the Melbourne Festival, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK. In 2007, the ensemble won the prestigious APRA/AMC Classical Music Award for Excellence in Experimental Music, recognizing its contributions to the development of new music in Australia. The ensemble has also been nominated for numerous other awards, including the Helpmann Awards and the Art Music Awards. Ensemble Offspring's commitment to new music has led to collaborations with a wide range of composers, including Australian luminaries such as Brett Dean, Liza Lim, and Kate Neal, as well as international figures like Steve Reich and Louis Andriessen. The ensemble has also worked with emerging composers through its Hatched Academy program, which provides mentorship and performance opportunities for young composers. In addition to its concert performances, Ensemble Offspring has also been involved in a number of interdisciplinary projects, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, and filmmakers. One notable example was the ensemble's 2018 production of "The Secret Noise," a multimedia work that combined live performance with animation and film. Ensemble Offspring's recordings include several critically acclaimed albums, including "The Secret Noise" and "The Ensemble Offspring Collection." The ensemble has also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including ABC Classic FM and the BBC. Overall, Ensemble Offspring has established itself as a vital force in the Australian new music scene, championing the work of both established and emerging composers and pushing the boundaries of what contemporary classical music can be. With its commitment to innovation and experimentation, the ensemble is sure to continue making waves in the years to come.More....
