Born in New York City in 1956, Steinberg showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of five. Her parents, both amateur musicians, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Steinberg's early musical education was rigorous and demanding. She studied with some of the most respected piano teachers in the country, including Leon Fleisher and Rudolf Serkin. She also attended the Juilliard School, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. After completing her studies at Juilliard, Steinberg embarked on a career as a concert pianist. She quickly gained a reputation as a gifted performer with a deep understanding of the music she played. Her repertoire was wide-ranging, encompassing everything from Bach to contemporary composers. One of Steinberg's early breakthrough performances came in 1982, when she played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic.
