He was born on December 3, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Rehm grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. Rehm's talent was evident from an early age, and he received his first formal training in music at the age of six. He studied piano, voice, and composition at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. Rehm's career in opera began in the early 1960s when he joined the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He quickly rose through the ranks and made his debut as a soloist in 1964, playing the role of the High Priest in Mozart's "Idomeneo." This performance was a turning point in Rehm's career, and he soon became a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera. Over the years, Rehm played a variety of roles in operas by composers such as Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, and Puccini. He was known for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his performances. Some of his most notable performances include his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner's "Ring Cycle," the title role in Verdi's "Falstaff," and the role of Scarpia in Puccini's "Tosca." Rehm's talent was recognized by the music industry, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1975, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer.
