Cappella Aquileia
Artist Info

Cappella Aquileia is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2006 by the conductor and musicologist Marcus Bosch. The ensemble is based in the city of Augsburg, Germany, and is named after the ancient Roman city of Aquileia, which was located in what is now northeastern Italy. The founding of Cappella Aquileia was inspired by Bosch's desire to create a chamber orchestra that would specialize in the performance of music from the Baroque and Classical periods. Bosch, who had previously served as the chief conductor of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, assembled a group of musicians who shared his passion for historically informed performance practice and began rehearsing in the fall of 2006. The ensemble's core members include a group of string players, a harpsichordist, and a group of wind players who perform on period instruments. Over the years, the ensemble has also collaborated with a number of guest soloists and conductors, including the violinist Midori Seiler and the conductor Reinhard Goebel. Cappella Aquileia has gained a reputation for its dynamic and engaging performances, which are characterized by a high level of technical precision and a deep understanding of the historical context of the music. The ensemble has performed at a number of prestigious venues and festivals throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Rheingau Musik Festival, and the Bachfest Leipzig. One of the highlights of Cappella Aquileia's career was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Salzburg Festival in 2010. The performance, which was conducted by Marcus Bosch and featured the tenor Christoph Prégardien as the Evangelist, was widely praised for its emotional intensity and its faithful adherence to the principles of historically informed performance practice. In addition to its live performances, Cappella Aquileia has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. The ensemble's debut album, which featured works by Bach and Handel, was released in 2008 and received widespread praise for its technical excellence and its sensitive interpretation of the music. Cappella Aquileia has also been the recipient of several awards and honors. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Bach's St. John Passion, which was conducted by Marcus Bosch and featured the tenor Julian Prégardien as the Evangelist. The ensemble has also been recognized for its contributions to the field of historically informed performance practice, and has been invited to participate in a number of academic conferences and symposia. Despite its relatively short history, Cappella Aquileia has established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the field of historically informed performance practice. With its commitment to technical excellence and its deep understanding of the historical context of the music, the ensemble has earned a loyal following among audiences and critics alike, and is poised to continue making significant contributions to the world of classical music for years to come.
