Born on October 10, 1949, in Leipzig, Germany, Neumann grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Neumann showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Neumann's musical education began at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied piano, conducting, and musicology. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where he received a degree in conducting. Neumann's early career was marked by his work as a conductor and musicologist in East Germany. He served as the conductor of the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra from 1975 to 1984 and was also a professor of musicology at the University of Leipzig. In 1984, Neumann moved to West Germany, where he continued his career as a conductor and musicologist. He served as the conductor of the Collegium Cartusianum in Cologne from 1984 to 1990 and was also a professor of musicology at the University of Cologne. During this time, Neumann gained a reputation as a leading interpreter of Baroque and Classical music. One of Neumann's most significant achievements as a conductor was his work with the Bach Collegium Japan. He served as the artistic director of the ensemble from 1990 to 2010 and led them in numerous performances and recordings of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Under Neumann's leadership, the Bach Collegium Japan became one of the most respected and acclaimed Baroque ensembles in the world. Neumann's work with the Bach Collegium Japan was recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2004, he was awarded the Bach Medal by the city of Leipzig, an honor that had previously been bestowed upon such luminaries as Pablo Casals and Leonard Bernstein. In 2008, Neumann was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, by the Japanese government in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of Japanese-German cultural exchange. In addition to his work with the Bach Collegium Japan, Neumann has also conducted numerous other orchestras and ensembles around the world. He has worked with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Academy of Ancient Music, among others. Neumann's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, as well as contemporary music. Neumann's contributions to the field of musicology are also significant. He has published numerous articles and books on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, including a comprehensive study of Bach's cantatas. Neumann's scholarship has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, Germany's most prestigious research award.
