The orchestra was founded in 1993 by conductor Gustav Kuhn, who also serves as its artistic director. The ensemble is made up of approximately 70 musicians, many of whom are from the Tyrol region of Austria. The Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele has become known for its performances of both classical and contemporary music. The ensemble has collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the highlights of the Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele's history was its performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1995. The ensemble performed a program of works by Mozart, including his Symphony No. 41, "Jupiter." The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish the orchestra as a major player in the classical music world. In addition to its performances at the Salzburg Festival, the Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele has also performed at a number of other prestigious venues and festivals around the world. These include the Lucerne Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. The ensemble has also received a number of awards and accolades over the years. In 2003, the Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele was awarded the Austrian Music Prize, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a musical ensemble in Austria. The orchestra has also been praised for its recordings, which have been released on a number of major labels, including Deutsche Grammophon and Sony Classical. Despite its success, the Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele has faced some controversy in recent years. In 2018, several members of the ensemble accused Gustav Kuhn of sexual harassment and abuse of power. Kuhn denied the allegations, but ultimately resigned from his position as artistic director of the orchestra. Despite this setback, the Orchester der Tiroler Festspiele continues to perform and record under the leadership of its new artistic director, Johannes Fritzsch. The ensemble remains committed to bringing the beauty and power of classical music to audiences around the world.More....
