Per Vollestad is a Norwegian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and interpretations of classical repertoire. Born on May 22, 1972, in Oslo, Norway, Vollestad showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument and began studying with renowned Norwegian pianist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg. Vollestad continued his musical education at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where he studied with professors Jiri Hlinka and Einar Henning Smebye. He also received guidance from pianists such as Leif Ove Andsnes, Murray Perahia, and András Schiff. During his studies, Vollestad won several awards and competitions, including the Steinway Prize and the Grieg Prize. After completing his studies, Vollestad embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, performing extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bergen Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Vollestad's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Edvard Grieg, a fellow Norwegian and one of the most important composers of the Romantic era. Vollestad has recorded several albums of Grieg's music, including a critically acclaimed recording of Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer, Vollestad is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at several institutions, including the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo. He has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring pianists. Throughout his career, Vollestad has received numerous awards and accolades for his performances and recordings. In 2002, he was awarded the prestigious Grieg Prize for his contributions to the promotion of Grieg's music. He has also been awarded the Norwegian Music Critics' Award and the Spellemannsprisen, Norway's highest music award. Despite his many achievements, Vollestad remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and record regularly, always striving to deepen his understanding of the music he plays and to share his passion for classical music with audiences around the world.
