Born on July 22, 1960, in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Lin began playing the violin at the age of five. His father, who was a chemical engineer, recognized his son's musical talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Lin's family moved to the United States when he was 12 years old, and he continued his musical studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the renowned violinist Dorothy DeLay, who had also taught other famous violinists such as Itzhak Perlman and Sarah Chang. Lin quickly established himself as a prodigious talent, winning numerous competitions and awards throughout his teenage years. In 1979, at the age of 19, Lin made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto under the baton of Zubin Mehta. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. Lin has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir Georg Solti, and Seiji Ozawa. One of the highlights of Lin's career was his performance at the 1986 Carnegie Hall concert celebrating the 90th birthday of legendary violinist Isaac Stern. Lin performed alongside other great violinists such as Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman, and the concert was broadcast live on national television. Lin is also a highly respected chamber musician, having performed with some of the most renowned ensembles in the world, such as the Juilliard String Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet. He has also been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989. In addition to his performing career, Lin is also a dedicated educator. He has served on the faculty of the Juilliard School since 1991 and has also taught at the Rice University Shepherd School of Music and the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers as soloists and chamber musicians. Lin has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Avery Fisher Prize in 1980, the Naumburg Violin Award in 1983, and the Musical America Instrumentalist of the Year award in 2000. He was also awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon by the President of the Republic of China in 2005. In addition to his performing and teaching activities, Lin is also a dedicated philanthropist. He has established the Cho-Liang Lin Scholarship Fund at the Juilliard School, which provides financial assistance to talented young musicians. He has also been involved in various charitable organizations, such as the Save the Children Foundation and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.
