Red Priest is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences around the world with their unique and dynamic performances. The group was founded in 1997 by recorder player Piers Adams, and has since become known for their innovative interpretations of Baroque and early Classical music. Piers Adams was born in 1960 in London, England. He began playing the recorder at the age of 11, and quickly developed a passion for early music. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal for his outstanding musicianship. After completing his studies, Adams began performing with various early music ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music and the English Concert. However, he soon became frustrated with the traditional approach to early music performance, which he felt was too rigid and academic. In 1997, Adams decided to form his own ensemble, which he named Red Priest after the fiery Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, who was known as the "Red Priest" due to his red hair and his position as a priest. The group's mission was to bring a fresh and exciting approach to early music performance, and to break down the barriers between classical music and other genres. Red Priest's first album, "Priest on the Run," was released in 1998 to critical acclaim. The album featured lively and virtuosic performances of works by Vivaldi, Telemann, and other Baroque composers, and showcased the group's unique blend of classical, folk, and rock influences. Since then, Red Priest has released several more albums, including "Nightmare in Venice," "Pirates of the Baroque," and "Johann, I'm Only Dancing." The group's repertoire includes works by Bach, Handel, and other Baroque masters, as well as traditional folk tunes and original compositions. One of Red Priest's most memorable performances was their appearance at the 2004 BBC Proms, where they performed a program of Vivaldi concertos and other Baroque works. The group's energetic and theatrical performance style was a hit with the audience, and they received a standing ovation. Red Priest has also performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. They have collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the King's Singers. In addition to their live performances, Red Priest has also been recognized for their recordings. Their album "Nightmare in Venice" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005, and their album "Pirates of the Baroque" won the MIDEM Classical Award in 2008. Red Priest's success can be attributed to their innovative approach to early music performance, as well as their virtuosic musicianship and engaging stage presence. The group's members, which currently include recorder player Piers Adams, violinist Adam Summerhayes, cellist Angela East, and harpsichordist David Wright, are all accomplished musicians with a passion for exploring new musical territory. Red Priest continues to push the boundaries of early music performance, and their dynamic and entertaining concerts are a testament to the enduring appeal of classical music.
