Artist Info
Birth:1980 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, EnglandRuby Hughes is a British soprano who has established herself as one of the most exciting and versatile classical music artists of her generation. Born in 1983 in London, Hughes grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music, where she was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Rose Bowl for her outstanding contribution to the college. Hughes made her professional debut in 2009 as a soloist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and since then has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. She has appeared at major venues and festivals across Europe, including the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of Hughes' most notable performances was her portrayal of the title role in Handel's "Theodora" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2016. The production, directed by Peter Sellars and conducted by William Christie, received critical acclaim and was hailed as a triumph for Hughes, who was praised for her "radiant, pure-toned singing" and "heartfelt portrayal" of the character. Hughes has also been recognized for her work in contemporary music, and has premiered works by composers such as Thomas Adès, George Benjamin, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. In 2018, she performed the world premiere of Adès' "The Exterminating Angel" at the Salzburg Festival, which was later broadcast on BBC Radio 3. In addition to her work on the opera stage, Hughes is also a sought-after recitalist and has performed at venues such as Wigmore Hall and the Oxford Lieder Festival. She has recorded several albums, including "Nocturnal" with lutenist Jonas Nordberg, which was named one of the best classical albums of 2018 by The Guardian. Hughes has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2011, she was named a BBC New Generation Artist, and in 2014 she was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award. She has also been nominated for a Grammy Award for her recording of Handel's "Messiah" with the Academy of Ancient Music. Despite her success, Hughes remains committed to exploring new repertoire and pushing the boundaries of classical music. In an interview with The Guardian, she said, "I'm always looking for something that's going to challenge me, that's going to make me grow as an artist and as a person." With her stunning voice, impeccable musicianship, and adventurous spirit, Ruby Hughes is a true star of the classical music world, and one whose career is sure to continue to flourish in the years to come.More....
