Born in Kazan, Russia in 1972, Gourari began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Kazan State Conservatory and later at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where she received her master's degree in piano performance. Gourari's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments. In 1991, she won first prize at the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund, Germany, and in 1994 she was awarded the prestigious German Music Critics' Prize for her debut recording of works by Schumann and Brahms.
