The work is based on a set of poems by Adelbert von Chamisso, which tell the story of a woman's love for a man, from her first meeting with him to his death and her eventual acceptance of his loss. The premiere of Frauenliebe took place in Berlin in 1837, with Loewe accompanying the singer. The work consists of eight movements, each of which sets one of Chamisso's poems to music. The first movement, "Seit ich ihn gesehen" (Since I saw him), is a gentle and lyrical introduction to the cycle, with the singer expressing her joy at having met the man she loves. The second movement, "Er, der Herrlichste von allen" (He, the most glorious of all), is a more passionate and dramatic piece, in which the singer declares her love for the man and her desire to be with him always. The third movement, "Ich kann's nicht fassen, nicht glauben" (I cannot grasp it, cannot believe it), is a more introspective piece, in which the singer reflects on the depth of her feelings and her fear of losing the man she loves. The fourth movement, "Du Ring an meinem Finger" (You ring on my finger), is a tender and romantic piece, in which the singer expresses her happiness at being engaged to the man she loves. The fifth movement, "Helft mir, ihr Schwestern" (Help me, sisters), is a more somber and mournful piece, in which the singer laments the illness of her beloved and her fear of losing him. The sixth movement, "Süsser Freund, du blickest" (Sweet friend, you gaze), is a gentle and comforting piece, in which the singer reassures her beloved of her love and support. The seventh movement, "An meinem Herzen, an meiner Brust" (On my heart, on my breast), is a poignant and emotional piece, in which the singer mourns the death of her beloved and expresses her grief and despair. The final movement, "Nun hast du mir den ersten Schmerz getan" (Now you have caused me the first pain), is a reflective and accepting piece, in which the singer comes to terms with her loss and acknowledges the pain of love. Overall, Frauenliebe is a deeply emotional and expressive work, with Loewe's music perfectly capturing the range of emotions expressed in Chamisso's poems. The work is a testament to the power of love and the human experience of loss and grief.More....
