"Les larmes, Op. 65/5" is a solo piano piece composed by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky in 1884. It is the fifth movement of his "Morceaux de fantaisie" (Fantasy Pieces), a collection of ten pieces for piano. The premiere of the piece was given by the composer himself in Moscow on November 19, 1884. The title "Les larmes" translates to "The Tears" in English, and the piece is characterized by its melancholic and emotional nature. It is written in the key of F-sharp minor and is marked "Andante molto cantabile ed espressivo" (very singing and expressive). The piece begins with a simple and haunting melody in the right hand, accompanied by a gentle arpeggio in the left hand. The melody is then repeated with added embellishments and variations, building in intensity and emotion. The middle section of the piece features a more agitated and dramatic theme, with rapid arpeggios and a sense of urgency. This section eventually gives way to a return of the opening melody, which is played with even greater expressiveness and tenderness. Overall, "Les larmes" is a beautiful and poignant piece that showcases Tchaikovsky's gift for melody and emotional depth. Its popularity has endured over the years, and it remains a beloved work in the piano repertoire.
