Silvestre Revueltas was a Mexican composer, violinist, and conductor who was born on December 31, 1899, in Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, Mexico. He was one of the most important composers of the 20th century in Mexico, and his music is known for its unique blend of Mexican folk music and modernist techniques. One of his most famous works is Itinerarios, which was composed in 1938. It is a suite for chamber orchestra that consists of four movements: "Allegro," "Lento," "Allegro," and "Allegro con fuoco." The piece was premiered on March 17, 1939, in Mexico City, conducted by Carlos Chávez. The first movement, "Allegro," is characterized by its lively and energetic rhythms, which are reminiscent of Mexican folk music. The second movement, "Lento," is more introspective and contemplative, with a haunting melody that is played by the strings. The third movement, "Allegro," is a playful and rhythmic scherzo that features a prominent role for the percussion section. The final movement, "Allegro con fuoco," is a fiery and intense finale that brings the piece to a thrilling conclusion. Overall, Itinerarios is a prime example of Revueltas' unique style, which blends traditional Mexican music with modernist techniques. The piece is characterized by its rhythmic vitality, colorful orchestration, and emotional intensity, and it remains one of the most important works in the Mexican classical music repertoire.
