Concerto in due tempi is a contemporary classical composition by Danish composer Per Nørgård. The piece was composed in 1986 and premiered on September 25, 1987, by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, with conductor Leif Segerstam and soloist Ole Edvard Antonsen on trumpet. The concerto is divided into two movements, each with its own distinct character and tempo. The first movement, marked "Allegro con brio," is a lively and energetic section that showcases the virtuosic abilities of the soloist. The second movement, marked "Adagio," is a slower and more contemplative section that allows for more expressive playing from the soloist. One of the most notable characteristics of Concerto in due tempi is Nørgård's use of microtonality. The piece features a number of notes that fall outside of the traditional Western tuning system, creating a unique and otherworldly sound. Additionally, Nørgård employs a number of extended techniques for the trumpet, such as flutter tonguing and glissandi, which further expand the range of sounds available to the soloist. Overall, Concerto in due tempi is a challenging and complex work that demands a high level of technical skill and musical sensitivity from both the soloist and the orchestra. Its innovative use of microtonality and extended techniques make it a standout piece in the contemporary classical repertoire.
