"Abschiedslied der Zugvögel" or "Farewell Song of the Migratory Birds" is a choral work composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1844. It is the second movement of his six-part song cycle "Sechs Lieder im Freien zu singen" or "Six Songs for Singing in the Open Air," Op. 63. The song cycle was composed during Mendelssohn's summer vacation in 1844, where he spent time in the countryside of Switzerland. The composer was inspired by the natural beauty of the surroundings and the songs were written to be performed outdoors. "Abschiedslied der Zugvögel" is a four-part choral work that features a soprano soloist. The lyrics were written by Ludwig Uhland and describe the migration of birds as they leave for warmer climates in the fall. The music is characterized by its flowing melody and gentle harmonies, which evoke the peacefulness of the natural world. The piece begins with a solo soprano singing the first verse, accompanied by a simple piano melody. The choir then joins in, singing the second verse in unison. The third verse features a more complex choral arrangement, with the different parts weaving in and out of each other. The final verse returns to the simplicity of the first, with the soprano soloist singing the melody once more. Overall, "Abschiedslied der Zugvögel" is a beautiful and serene piece of music that captures the essence of Mendelssohn's love for nature. It premiered in Leipzig in 1844 and has since become a beloved part of the choral repertoire.
