"I am Goya..." is a contemporary classical composition by Nigel Osborne, a British composer and music educator. The piece was composed in 1990 and premiered on October 25th of the same year at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, performed by the London Sinfonietta and conducted by Diego Masson. The composition is divided into three movements, each of which is inspired by a different painting by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. The first movement, titled "The Sleep of Reason," is based on Goya's etching "El sueño de la razón produce monstruos" (The sleep of reason produces monsters). It is a slow and eerie piece, featuring dissonant harmonies and haunting melodies that evoke the nightmarish quality of Goya's work. The second movement, "The Third of May," is based on Goya's painting "El tres de mayo de 1808 en Madrid" (The Third of May 1808 in Madrid). This movement is more dramatic and intense, with driving rhythms and powerful brass and percussion sections that convey the sense of conflict and violence depicted in the painting. The final movement, "The Disasters of War," is based on Goya's series of etchings "Los desastres de la guerra" (The Disasters of War). It is a somber and reflective piece, featuring slow and mournful melodies that convey the sense of loss and despair that permeates Goya's work. Overall, "I am Goya..." is a powerful and evocative composition that captures the essence of Goya's art through music. Osborne's use of dissonance, rhythm, and melody creates a vivid and emotional experience that transports the listener into the world of Goya's paintings and etchings.
