Louis Marchand was a French Baroque composer and organist who lived from 1669 to 1732. He was known for his keyboard music, particularly his harpsichord pieces. One of his most famous works is the "Pièces de clavecin," a collection of harpsichord pieces that was published in 1699. The "Pièces de clavecin" consists of four suites, each containing several movements. The first suite is in D major and includes an allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. The second suite is in G major and includes a prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. The third suite is in A minor and includes a prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, and chaconne. The fourth suite is in E minor and includes a prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. The "Pièces de clavecin" is characterized by its use of ornamentation, particularly trills and mordents. The pieces are also notable for their use of counterpoint, with multiple melodic lines weaving in and out of each other. Marchand's music is often compared to that of his contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach, and the "Pièces de clavecin" is considered to be one of the most important collections of French Baroque keyboard music. The "Pièces de clavecin" was premiered in Paris in 1699, and it quickly became popular among French harpsichordists. The collection was reprinted several times in the 18th century, and it continues to be performed and recorded today. Marchand's music had a significant influence on the development of French keyboard music, and his legacy can be heard in the works of later composers such as François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau.
