'Mutta' is a contemporary classical composition by Finnish composer Jukka Tiensuu. The piece was composed in 1990 and premiered on October 4th of the same year in Helsinki, Finland. The composition is written for a chamber ensemble consisting of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion. The piece is divided into three movements, each with its own distinct character and mood. The first movement, titled "Lento," is characterized by its fast-paced, frenetic energy. The instruments weave in and out of each other, creating a sense of urgency and restlessness. The second movement, "Lento con sordini," is much more subdued and introspective. The instruments are muted, creating a hushed, almost secretive atmosphere. The third and final movement, "Lento molto," is the longest of the three and is marked by its slow, mournful quality. The instruments play long, sustained notes, creating a sense of longing and sadness. One of the most striking characteristics of 'Mutta' is its use of extended techniques. Tiensuu employs a wide range of unconventional playing techniques, such as flutter-tonguing, multiphonics, and percussive effects, to create a unique and otherworldly sound. The piece also features a great deal of improvisation, with the performers given a certain amount of freedom to interpret and embellish the score. Overall, 'Mutta' is a complex and challenging composition that showcases Tiensuu's innovative approach to contemporary classical music. Its use of extended techniques and improvisation make it a unique and exciting addition to the modern classical repertoire.
