"En tierras de Jerez" is a composition for guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. It was composed in 1973 and premiered on May 17, 1974, in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, with Narciso Yepes as the soloist and the Orquesta Nacional de España conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. The piece is divided into three movements, each of which is inspired by a different aspect of the region of Jerez de la Frontera, located in the province of Cádiz in southern Spain. The first movement, "Allegro con spirito," is titled "La Feria" and evokes the festive atmosphere of the annual fair in Jerez, with its flamenco music, dancing, and bullfighting. The second movement, "Adagio," is titled "La Bodega" and is a tribute to the sherry wine cellars that are a hallmark of the region. The slow, lyrical music is meant to evoke the peacefulness and contemplation of the aging process of the wine. The final movement, "Allegro," is titled "El Abuelo" and is a tribute to Rodrigo's grandfather, who was from Jerez. The music is lively and playful, with a folkloric character that reflects the composer's affection for the region and its people. The piece is characterized by Rodrigo's signature use of Spanish folk melodies and rhythms, as well as his skillful orchestration and virtuosic writing for the guitar. The guitar part is challenging and requires a high level of technical proficiency, but also allows for expressive playing and improvisation. The orchestration is colorful and varied, with prominent roles for the brass and percussion sections, as well as solo passages for the woodwinds and strings. "En tierras de Jerez" is a significant work in Rodrigo's oeuvre, as it represents a return to his roots and a celebration of his Spanish heritage. It is also a testament to his lifelong love of the guitar, which he considered to be the quintessential instrument of Spain. The piece has become a staple of the guitar repertoire and is frequently performed and recorded by leading guitarists and orchestras around the world.
