Franz Liszt's Prelude & Fugue for piano in A minor (after Bach BWV 543), S. 462/1, is a transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in A minor for organ. Liszt composed this piece in 1870, and it was premiered in the same year by the composer himself. The piece consists of two movements, the Prelude and the Fugue. The Prelude is marked "Andante con moto," and it begins with a solemn and melancholic melody in the left hand. The right hand then enters with a series of arpeggios, which gradually build in intensity and lead to a climax. The melody returns, and the piece ends with a quiet and introspective coda. The Fugue is marked "Allegro moderato," and it begins with a subject that is derived from the opening melody of the Prelude. The subject is then developed through a series of imitative entries, with the left hand providing a steady bass line. The fugue reaches a climax with a virtuosic passage in the right hand, and it ends with a triumphant coda. Liszt's transcription of Bach's Prelude and Fugue is characterized by his use of virtuosic piano techniques, such as rapid arpeggios and octave passages. He also adds his own harmonic and rhythmic embellishments to the original score, giving the piece a more Romantic flavor. Despite these changes, Liszt remains faithful to Bach's original composition, and his transcription is considered a masterpiece of the piano repertoire.
