'BONE+' is a contemporary classical composition by Japanese composer Keiko Harada. The piece was composed in 2015 and premiered on October 17th of the same year at the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall. The composition consists of three movements, each with its own distinct characteristics. The first movement, titled "Bone," is characterized by its use of percussive sounds and dissonant harmonies. The second movement, "Breath," is more lyrical and features a solo cello accompanied by a string orchestra. The final movement, "Blood," is the most intense of the three, with a driving rhythm and complex harmonies. One of the defining characteristics of 'BONE+' is its use of extended techniques, particularly in the string section. The performers are asked to use techniques such as col legno (striking the strings with the wood of the bow), sul ponticello (playing near the bridge of the instrument), and glissandi (sliding between notes) to create unique sounds and textures. Another notable aspect of the composition is its use of silence. Harada employs moments of silence throughout the piece, allowing the music to breathe and creating a sense of tension and release. Overall, 'BONE+' is a challenging and complex work that showcases Harada's skill as a composer and her willingness to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music.
