André Mathíeu was a Canadian composer and pianist who was born on February 18, 1929, in Montreal, Quebec. He was a child prodigy who began playing the piano at the age of four and gave his first public performance at the age of seven. Mathíeu went on to become one of Canada's most celebrated composers, known for his works in a variety of genres, including opera, ballet, and film scores. One of Mathíeu's most famous works is his Nocturne for violin & piano (incomplete), which was composed in 1944 when he was just 15 years old. The piece was originally intended to be a full-length sonata for violin and piano, but Mathíeu only completed the first movement before abandoning the project. The Nocturne for violin & piano (incomplete) premiered on May 7, 1945, at the Montreal Conservatory of Music, where Mathíeu was a student at the time. The performance featured Mathíeu on piano and his friend and fellow student, violinist Claude Létourneau. The Nocturne for violin & piano (incomplete) is a single-movement work that lasts approximately 10 minutes. The piece is characterized by its lyrical melodies, lush harmonies, and virtuosic passages for both the violin and piano. The opening theme is introduced by the violin and is later taken up by the piano, creating a sense of dialogue between the two instruments. The middle section of the piece features a more energetic and rhythmic theme, which is developed through a series of variations before returning to the opening theme. Despite being incomplete, the Nocturne for violin & piano has become one of Mathíeu's most beloved works and is frequently performed by violinists and pianists around the world. The piece showcases Mathíeu's prodigious talent as a composer and his ability to create music that is both technically challenging and emotionally expressive.
