Hyacinthe Elénore Klosé was a French clarinetist and composer who lived from 1808 to 1880. He is best known for his contributions to the development of the modern clarinet, including the creation of the Boehm system. However, he also composed a number of works for the clarinet, including the Air varié, Op. 21. The Air varié, Op. 21 was composed in 1843 and premiered in Paris the same year. It is a set of variations on a theme, with each variation showcasing different technical and expressive aspects of the clarinet. The work is divided into six movements, each with its own distinct character and mood. The first movement is marked Adagio and features a lyrical melody played by the clarinet over a simple accompaniment. The second movement, marked Allegro, is a lively and playful scherzo that showcases the clarinet's agility and virtuosity. The third movement, marked Andante, is a slow and expressive variation that highlights the clarinet's ability to produce a wide range of dynamics and colors. The fourth movement, marked Allegro vivace, is a fast and energetic variation that features rapid runs and arpeggios. The fifth movement, marked Adagio cantabile, is a slow and melancholy variation that showcases the clarinet's ability to produce a beautiful, singing tone. The final movement, marked Allegro moderato, is a lively and joyful variation that brings the work to a rousing conclusion. Overall, the Air varié, Op. 21 is a challenging and rewarding work for the clarinetist, showcasing the instrument's technical and expressive capabilities. It is also a testament to Klosé's skill as both a composer and a clarinetist, and his contributions to the development of the modern clarinet.
