Jephté is an opera composed by Michel Pignolet de Montéclair in 1732. The plot of the opera is based on the biblical story of Jephthah, a judge of Israel who made a vow to sacrifice the first thing that came out of his house if he was victorious in battle. Unfortunately, his daughter was the first to greet him upon his return, and he was forced to fulfill his vow. The opera is divided into five acts and features a libretto by Antoine Houdar de la Motte. The music is characterized by its use of French Baroque style, with intricate vocal lines and ornate instrumental accompaniment. The premiere of Jephté took place at the Paris Opera on February 3, 1732. The opera was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it quickly became one of Montéclair's most popular works. The movements of Jephté include a prologue, five acts, and an epilogue. The prologue features a chorus of nymphs and shepherds who sing of the joys of the countryside. The five acts of the opera follow the story of Jephthah, with each act featuring a different scene from his life. The epilogue features a chorus of angels who sing of the joys of heaven. One of the characteristics of Jephté is its use of recitative, a style of singing that is closer to speech than to song. This style of singing is used to advance the plot and convey the emotions of the characters. Another characteristic of the opera is its use of arias, which are more melodic and expressive than recitative. Overall, Jephté is a masterpiece of French Baroque opera, with its intricate vocal lines, ornate instrumental accompaniment, and powerful storytelling. It remains a popular work to this day and is considered one of Montéclair's greatest achievements.
