Vsevolod Zaderatsky's Prelude and Fugue No. 5 for piano in D major was composed in 1937 while the composer was serving a 10-year sentence in a Soviet labor camp. The piece was premiered in 1979, over 40 years after its composition, by pianist Maria Yudina. The Prelude is marked "Allegro con brio" and begins with a lively and energetic theme in the right hand, accompanied by a steady left-hand rhythm. The theme is then developed and expanded upon, with the left hand taking on a more prominent role. The middle section of the Prelude features a more lyrical and expressive melody, before returning to the opening theme and concluding with a flourish. The Fugue is marked "Allegro moderato" and begins with a subject in the right hand that is then imitated by the left hand. The subject is then developed and passed between the hands, with the left hand taking on a more complex and virtuosic role. The middle section of the Fugue features a more subdued and introspective theme, before returning to the opening subject and concluding with a triumphant coda. Zaderatsky's Prelude and Fugue No. 5 showcases the composer's mastery of counterpoint and his ability to create complex and engaging musical structures. Despite the difficult circumstances under which it was composed, the piece is a testament to Zaderatsky's resilience and creativity as a composer.
