"Der lachende Ehemann" is a comic operetta composed by Edmund Eysler. It premiered on December 30, 1917, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria. The libretto was written by Julius Bauer and Fritz Grünbaum. The operetta is divided into three acts and tells the story of a wealthy businessman named Max who is married to a beautiful but vain woman named Helene. Max is unhappy in his marriage and seeks the affection of other women. However, when Helene discovers his infidelity, she decides to teach him a lesson by pretending to be in love with another man. Max becomes jealous and realizes how much he truly loves his wife. The music of "Der lachende Ehemann" is characterized by its catchy melodies and lively rhythms. Eysler's use of waltzes, polkas, and marches adds to the operetta's comedic tone. The score also features several memorable songs, including "Ich bin verliebt," "Ich bin ein Mann von Welt," and "Ich bin der lachende Ehemann." The operetta was a huge success in Vienna and quickly became popular throughout Europe. It was later adapted into several films and stage productions. Today, "Der lachende Ehemann" is considered one of Eysler's most popular works and a classic of the operetta genre.
