De Aires antiguos is a composition for string orchestra by the Mexican composer Eduardo Angulo. It was composed in 1985 and premiered on November 28 of the same year by the Orquesta de Cámara de Bellas Artes, conducted by Luis Herrera de la Fuente. The piece is divided into three movements, each of which is based on a different traditional Mexican melody. The first movement, titled "El Siquisiri," is a lively and rhythmic dance from the state of Sonora. The second movement, "La Sandunga," is a slow and melancholic song from the state of Oaxaca. The third movement, "El Gusto," is a festive and energetic dance from the state of Jalisco. Despite being based on traditional melodies, Angulo's treatment of the material is highly original and modern. He uses a variety of contemporary techniques, such as dissonant harmonies, irregular rhythms, and extended techniques for the strings, to create a unique and innovative sound world. One of the most striking characteristics of De Aires antiguos is its use of texture. Angulo frequently divides the orchestra into smaller groups, creating intricate and complex interplay between the different sections. This creates a rich and varied sonic landscape that is both engaging and challenging for the listener. Overall, De Aires antiguos is a masterful example of contemporary Mexican classical music. It combines traditional melodies with modern techniques to create a work that is both deeply rooted in Mexican culture and forward-looking in its artistic vision.
