Eduardo Angulo was a Spanish composer born on January 22, 1954, in Bilbao, Spain. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Angulo showed a great interest in music and began studying piano and composition at the Bilbao Conservatory. After completing his studies, Angulo moved to Paris to continue his musical education. There, he studied with renowned composers such as Olivier Messiaen and Iannis Xenakis. He also attended courses at the IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music), where he learned about electronic music and computer-assisted composition. In the early 1980s, Angulo returned to Spain and began working as a composer and music teacher. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative and experimental approach to music, which combined traditional classical techniques with electronic and computer-generated sounds. One of Angulo's most notable works is his opera "El viaje a Simorgh" (The Journey to Simorgh), which premiered in 1990. The opera is based on a Persian myth and tells the story of a group of birds who embark on a journey to find the mythical Simorgh bird. The music is a blend of traditional Western classical music and Middle Eastern influences, with electronic sounds and spoken word elements. Another significant work by Angulo is his "Concierto para piano y orquesta" (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra), which was premiered in 1995. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, with complex rhythms and harmonies that showcase Angulo's unique style. The piece has been performed by numerous pianists and orchestras around the world. Throughout his career, Angulo also composed a number of chamber music works, including string quartets, sonatas, and trios. His music often explores themes of spirituality, nature, and the human condition, and is characterized by its use of unconventional sounds and textures. In addition to his work as a composer, Angulo was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Bilbao Conservatory and the Musikene School of Music, and was known for his dedication to his students and his innovative teaching methods. Sadly, Eduardo Angulo passed away on December 14, 2019, at the age of 65. However, his legacy as a composer and educator lives on, and his music continues to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
