Berenice is an opera seria in three acts composed by Francesco Araia. The opera was composed in 1765 and premiered in Naples in the same year. The libretto was written by Antonio Salvi and is based on the play Antiochus by Pietro Metastasio. The plot of Berenice revolves around the love triangle between the Roman Emperor Titus, his friend Antiochus, and Berenice, the Queen of Palestine. Berenice and Titus are in love, but Titus is torn between his love for Berenice and his duty to Rome. Meanwhile, Antiochus is also in love with Berenice and is determined to win her heart. The first act of the opera begins with Berenice and Titus expressing their love for each other. However, Titus is reminded of his duty to Rome and decides to break off the relationship. Berenice is heartbroken and turns to Antiochus for comfort. Antiochus sees this as an opportunity to win Berenice's heart and declares his love for her. In the second act, Titus realizes that he cannot live without Berenice and decides to renounce his throne in order to be with her. However, the Roman Senate refuses to accept his decision and demands that he choose between his love for Berenice and his duty to Rome. Titus ultimately chooses Rome and breaks Berenice's heart once again. The final act of the opera sees Berenice and Antiochus plotting to escape Rome and start a new life together. However, their plans are foiled by Titus, who has a change of heart and decides to let Berenice go. The opera ends with Berenice and Antiochus leaving Rome, while Titus is left alone to contemplate his decision. Berenice is characterized by its beautiful arias and duets, which showcase the vocal talents of the singers. The opera also features a number of elaborate set pieces and costumes, which were typical of the opera seria genre. Overall, Berenice is a tragic love story that explores the themes of duty, love, and sacrifice.
