"Flickan under nymånen" is a symphonic poem composed by Ture Rangström in 1923. The piece was premiered on November 22, 1923, by the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Armas Järnefelt. The symphonic poem is divided into three movements, each depicting a different scene from the poem "Flickan under nymånen" by Erik Axel Karlfeldt. The first movement, "Under nymånen," begins with a soft and mysterious introduction, representing the moonlit night. The music gradually builds up to a climax, depicting the arrival of the protagonist, a young girl, who is described as "a vision in white." The second movement, "Vid källan," is a serene and peaceful interlude, representing the girl's encounter with a spring in the forest. The final movement, "I skogen," is the most dramatic of the three, depicting the girl's encounter with a group of trolls in the forest. The music is full of tension and suspense, with dissonant harmonies and eerie melodies. Rangström's music is characterized by its lush harmonies, colorful orchestration, and expressive melodies. He was heavily influenced by the Romantic tradition, particularly the music of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. However, he also incorporated elements of Swedish folk music into his compositions, giving them a distinct national flavor. "Flickan under nymånen" is considered one of Rangström's most important works and is often performed in concert halls throughout Sweden. The piece has also been recorded by several prominent orchestras, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
