Chain 2, Dialogue for Violin & Orchestra is a composition by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. It was composed in 1984 and premiered on October 20, 1985, in Salzburg, Austria, with Anne-Sophie Mutter as the soloist and the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. The piece consists of two movements, each of which is divided into several sections. The first movement, entitled "Ad libitum," is characterized by a free-flowing, improvisatory quality. The solo violin and the orchestra engage in a dialogue, with the violin often interrupting or commenting on the orchestral textures. The movement is marked by sudden shifts in mood and tempo, as well as by the use of extended techniques such as glissandi and harmonics. The second movement, entitled "A battuta," is more structured and rhythmic. It is built around a series of short, repeated motifs that are passed back and forth between the soloist and the orchestra. The movement is marked by a sense of urgency and intensity, with the soloist and the orchestra engaging in a kind of musical combat. The movement ends with a sudden, explosive chord. Chain 2 is characterized by Lutosławski's use of aleatoric techniques, in which certain elements of the music are left to chance or the performer's discretion. For example, in the first movement, the soloist is given the freedom to improvise certain passages, while in the second movement, the repeated motifs are played at different speeds and with different articulations each time they appear. Overall, Chain 2 is a virtuosic and challenging work that showcases the expressive range of the violin and the composer's innovative approach to orchestration and form.
