Sebastián Aguilera de Heredia was a Spanish composer and organist who lived from 1561 to 1627. He was born in Saragossa and spent most of his life working in the Cathedral of Huesca. He is known for his sacred music, particularly his organ works, which are considered some of the finest examples of Spanish Baroque music. One of his most famous works is the Magnificat Octavi toni à 8, which was composed in the late 16th century. The piece is a setting of the Magnificat, a hymn of praise to the Virgin Mary, and is written for eight voices. It is scored for two choirs, each consisting of four voices (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). The Magnificat Octavi toni à 8 is divided into nine movements, each of which corresponds to a different section of the Magnificat text. The first movement is an instrumental introduction, followed by the first choir singing the first verse of the Magnificat. The second choir then enters with the second verse, and the two choirs alternate throughout the piece. The music of the Magnificat Octavi toni à 8 is characterized by its rich harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and expressive use of dissonance. Aguilera de Heredia was known for his use of chromaticism, which is evident in this piece. The music is also highly ornamented, with each voice weaving in and out of the others in a complex web of sound. The Magnificat Octavi toni à 8 was premiered in the Cathedral of Huesca, where Aguilera de Heredia was the organist. It quickly became popular throughout Spain and was performed in many other cathedrals and churches. Today, it is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Baroque music and is still performed and recorded by choirs and ensembles around the world.
