Dora Pejacevic was a Croatian composer who lived from 1885 to 1923. She was a prolific composer, writing over 100 works in her short life. One of her most famous works is the "Intermezzi (2) for piano, Op. 38," which was composed in 1917. The "Intermezzi (2) for piano, Op. 38" is a set of two pieces for solo piano. The first movement is marked "Andante con moto," and the second movement is marked "Allegro con fuoco." The two movements are quite different in character, with the first being more introspective and the second being more energetic. The first movement begins with a gentle melody in the right hand, accompanied by a simple chord progression in the left hand. The melody is then repeated with some variations, and the left hand becomes more active, adding some counterpoint to the melody. The middle section of the movement is more dramatic, with a faster tempo and more complex harmonies. The movement ends with a return to the opening melody, but with some added ornamentation. The second movement is much more lively than the first. It begins with a fast, rhythmic melody in the right hand, accompanied by a driving bass line in the left hand. The melody is then repeated with some variations, and the left hand becomes even more active, adding some syncopation to the rhythm. The middle section of the movement is more lyrical, with a slower tempo and a more melodic melody. The movement ends with a return to the opening melody, but with some added flourishes and a faster tempo. Overall, the "Intermezzi (2) for piano, Op. 38" is a beautiful and engaging work for solo piano. It showcases Pejacevic's skill as a composer, with its complex harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and expressive melodies. The work premiered in 1918 in Zagreb, Croatia, and has since become a staple of the piano repertoire.
