"Il burbero di buon cuore" is an opera buffa in two acts composed by Vicente Martin y Soler. The libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte, who also wrote the libretti for Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "Così fan tutte." The opera was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on February 28, 1786. The plot of "Il burbero di buon cuore" revolves around the character of Don Anselmo, a wealthy merchant who is known for his gruff and ill-tempered demeanor. Despite his reputation, Don Anselmo is secretly in love with the beautiful and virtuous Rosaura, who is engaged to his nephew, Don Florindo. When Don Anselmo discovers that Rosaura's father has lost all of his money, he offers to pay for the wedding in exchange for Rosaura's hand in marriage. Rosaura is horrified by the proposal and begs Don Florindo to help her escape. With the help of his servant, Pasquale, Don Florindo comes up with a plan to trick Don Anselmo into believing that Rosaura has died of a broken heart. The plan works, and Don Anselmo is overcome with grief. However, when he discovers that Rosaura is still alive and that he has been tricked, he forgives everyone and agrees to let Rosaura marry Don Florindo. "Il burbero di buon cuore" is characterized by its lively and humorous music, which features a variety of vocal styles and instrumental textures. The opera includes several memorable arias, duets, and ensembles, including Don Anselmo's aria "Saper bramate," Rosaura's aria "Non mi dir," and the quartet "Che confusione." The music is notable for its use of comic effects, such as sudden shifts in tempo and dynamics, unexpected harmonies, and playful melodies. The premiere of "Il burbero di buon cuore" was a great success, and the opera went on to be performed throughout Europe. However, it eventually fell out of favor and was largely forgotten until the 20th century, when it was rediscovered and revived by scholars and performers. Today, "Il burbero di buon cuore" is recognized as a masterpiece of the opera buffa genre and is regularly performed in opera houses around the world.
