The opera was composed in 1775 and premiered in Eszterháza, Hungary, on June 29, 1775. The libretto was written by Carlo Goldoni, an Italian playwright. The plot of L'incontro improvviso revolves around the unexpected encounter between two lovers, Emira and Ali, who were separated by a shipwreck. Emira, a princess, is traveling with her father, the Sultan, when their ship is wrecked. Ali, a prince, is also traveling by sea when his ship is wrecked. The two lovers are separated and believe each other to be dead. Emira and her father are taken in by a group of bandits, led by Osmin. Ali is also taken in by the bandits, but he disguises himself as a dervish, a Muslim religious figure. Ali and Emira eventually meet and recognize each other, but they must keep their love a secret from the bandits and Emira's father. The opera is divided into three acts and features a number of musical movements, including arias, duets, and ensembles. The music is characterized by Haydn's use of Turkish and Middle Eastern musical elements, which were popular in Europe at the time. L'incontro improvviso is considered one of Haydn's most successful operas, and it was well-received by audiences and critics alike. The opera's themes of love, deception, and the clash of cultures continue to resonate with audiences today.More....
