"Narzeczony" (The Fiancé) is a piano piece composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1831. It is part of his collection of 24 preludes, Op. 28, which he composed during his stay in Majorca, Spain. The prelude is in D-flat major and is the fifteenth piece in the collection. The piece is marked "Sostenuto" and has a slow and melancholic character. It is divided into three sections, with the first and third sections being in D-flat major and the middle section in B minor. The first section features a simple and lyrical melody that is repeated throughout the section, accompanied by arpeggiated chords in the left hand. The middle section is more agitated and features a faster and more complex melody, with a more active left-hand accompaniment. The final section returns to the original melody, but with a more ornamented and embellished version. The piece is characterized by its expressive and emotional nature, with a sense of longing and nostalgia. It is often interpreted as a reflection of Chopin's own personal feelings of homesickness and separation from his fiancée, the writer George Sand, who was not with him during his stay in Majorca. The piece has been described as a "song without words" and is considered one of Chopin's most beautiful and poignant compositions. The preludes, including "Narzeczony," were premiered by Chopin himself in Paris in 1839, and were published the same year by the German publisher Breitkopf & Härtel. The collection has since become one of Chopin's most popular and enduring works, and has been performed and recorded by countless pianists around the world.
