Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suites for orchestra Nos. 1 & 2, Opp. 46 & 55, are two of the most famous and beloved works in the classical music repertoire. Composed in 1875 and 1891 respectively, these suites are based on the incidental music Grieg wrote for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. The first suite, Op. 46, premiered in 1888 and consists of four movements. The first movement, "Morning Mood," is a gentle and peaceful depiction of a sunrise over the Norwegian countryside. The second movement, "The Death of Ase," is a mournful and somber piece that depicts the death of Peer Gynt's mother. The third movement, "Anitra's Dance," is a lively and playful dance that represents the seductive and exotic Anitra. The final movement, "In the Hall of the Mountain King," is a dramatic and intense piece that depicts Peer Gynt's encounter with the trolls in the mountains. The second suite, Op. 55, premiered in 1893 and also consists of four movements. The first movement, "The Abduction of the Bride," is a lively and energetic piece that depicts Peer Gynt's abduction of the bride Ingrid. The second movement, "Ingrid's Lament," is a melancholy and mournful piece that represents Ingrid's sadness and despair. The third movement, "Peer Gynt's Homecoming," is a triumphant and joyful piece that depicts Peer Gynt's return home after his adventures. The final movement, "Solveig's Song," is a beautiful and haunting piece that represents the love between Peer Gynt and Solveig. Overall, the Peer Gynt Suites are characterized by their use of Norwegian folk melodies and rhythms, as well as their vivid and evocative depictions of the characters and scenes from Ibsen's play. Grieg's use of orchestration and harmony is also notable, as he creates a rich and colorful sound that perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere of each movement. Today, the Peer Gynt Suites remain some of the most popular and frequently performed works in the classical music repertoire, beloved by audiences and musicians alike for their beauty, emotion, and power.
