Filandro is an opera seria in three acts composed by Nicola Porpora. The opera was first performed in Rome in 1733. The libretto was written by Pietro Metastasio, who was one of the most famous librettists of the time. The plot of the opera revolves around the love story of Filandro and Elmira. Act I begins with Filandro, the prince of Corinth, returning from a battle. He is in love with Elmira, the daughter of the king of Crete. Meanwhile, Elmira is also in love with Filandro but is unable to express her feelings due to her engagement. In Act II, Filandro and Elmira finally confess their love for each other. However, their happiness is short-lived as the prince of Argos discovers their secret and challenges Filandro to a duel. Filandro wins the duel but spares the prince's life, which earns him the respect of his friend and the admiration of Elmira. Act III sees the resolution of the love triangle. The king of Crete intervenes and allows Elmira to choose her own husband. She chooses Filandro, and the two are finally able to be together. The opera ends with a joyful celebration of their love. Porpora's music for Filandro is characterized by its virtuosity and expressiveness. The arias are full of elaborate ornamentation and vocal pyrotechnics, which were typical of the opera seria style. The music also reflects the emotional intensity of the characters, with soaring melodies and dramatic harmonies. Filandro was a popular opera in its time and was performed throughout Europe.
