Composer:Hieronymus PraetoriusGenre:ChoralStyle:ChoralAverage_duration:7:47Hieronymus Praetorius was a German composer and organist who lived from 1560 to 1629. He was a member of a famous musical family, which included his father Jacob Praetorius and his cousin Michael Praetorius. Hieronymus Praetorius composed a number of works for the church, including his Magnificat. The Magnificat is a musical setting of the biblical text known as the Song of Mary, which is found in the Gospel of Luke. The text is a hymn of praise that Mary sings after she learns that she will give birth to Jesus. The Magnificat has been set to music by many composers over the centuries, and Hieronymus Praetorius's setting is one of the most famous. Praetorius's Magnificat was composed in the early 17th century, and it premiered in Hamburg in 1613. The work is divided into eight movements, each of which sets a different section of the Magnificat text. The movements are as follows: 1. Magnificat anima mea Dominum (My soul magnifies the Lord) 2. Et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo (And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior) 3. Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae (For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant) 4. Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est (For he who is mighty has done great things for me) 5. Et misericordia eius a progenie in progenies timentibus eum (And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation) 6. Fecit potentiam in brachio suo (He has shown strength with his arm) 7. Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles (He has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly) 8. Suscepit Israel puerum suum recordatus misericordiae suae (He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy) Praetorius's setting of the Magnificat is characterized by its use of polyphony, which is a style of music in which multiple voices sing different melodies at the same time. The work also features a number of vocal solos and duets, which add variety and interest to the overall texture of the music. The Magnificat is a beautiful and powerful work that has been performed and admired for centuries, and it remains a testament to the enduring power of religious music.More....
