Yot Par (Seven Dances) is a collection of Armenian folk dances composed by Komitas, a prominent Armenian composer and ethnomusicologist. The piece was composed in 1913 and premiered in the same year in Constantinople. The collection consists of seven movements, each representing a different Armenian folk dance. The first movement, "Unabi," is a lively dance in 6/8 time signature. The second movement, "Marali," is a slow and melancholic dance in 9/8 time signature. The third movement, "Shushiki," is a fast and energetic dance in 2/4 time signature. The fourth movement, "Het u Araj," is a playful dance in 6/8 time signature. The fifth movement, "Uzundara," is a slow and graceful dance in 9/8 time signature. The sixth movement, "Shoror," is a lively dance in 6/8 time signature. The final movement, "Yerangi," is a celebratory dance in 2/4 time signature. The characteristics of Yot Par are deeply rooted in Armenian folk music. Komitas was known for his extensive research and documentation of Armenian folk music, and Yot Par is a testament to his dedication to preserving and promoting Armenian cultural heritage. The use of traditional Armenian instruments such as the duduk, zurna, and dhol, as well as the incorporation of Armenian folk melodies and rhythms, make Yot Par a quintessential example of Armenian folk music. Overall, Yot Par is a vibrant and dynamic collection of Armenian folk dances that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Armenia. Its premiere in 1913 marked a significant moment in Armenian music history, and it continues to be celebrated and performed to this day.
