The Sonata for violin & piano No. 2 in F minor, Op. 6 is a composition by the Romanian composer George Enescu. It was composed in 1899 when Enescu was only 17 years old and is considered one of his earliest works. The sonata premiered in Paris in 1901, with Enescu himself playing the violin and the pianist Jacques Thibaud accompanying him. The sonata is divided into four movements. The first movement, marked Allegro molto moderato, begins with a melancholic and introspective theme played by the violin. The piano then enters with a more lively and rhythmic theme, creating a dialogue between the two instruments. The movement ends with a return to the initial theme, played by the violin. The second movement, marked Andante, is a lyrical and expressive piece, with the violin playing a long and flowing melody over a simple piano accompaniment. The third movement, marked Allegro con spirito, is a lively and energetic scherzo, with the violin and piano playing in unison and creating a playful and joyful atmosphere. The final movement, marked Finale: Très animé, is a virtuosic and technically demanding piece, with both instruments playing fast and intricate passages. The movement is characterized by its rhythmic complexity and its use of Romanian folk melodies, which Enescu would later become known for. Overall, the Sonata for violin & piano No. 2 in F minor, Op. 6 is a mature and sophisticated work, especially considering Enescu's young age when he composed it. It showcases Enescu's mastery of both the violin and the piano, as well as his ability to create complex and emotionally rich compositions.
