The opera was first performed in Rome in 1714. The libretto was written by Domenico Lalli and is based on the story of Scipio Africanus, a Roman general who defeated Hannibal in the Second Punic War. The plot of the opera revolves around Scipio's campaign in Spain against the Carthaginians. Scipio is in love with Berenice, the daughter of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal. Berenice is also in love with Scipio, but their love is complicated by the fact that they are on opposite sides of the war. Scipio is torn between his duty to Rome and his love for Berenice. The first act of the opera opens with Scipio's army preparing for battle. Scipio sings an aria expressing his determination to defeat the Carthaginians. Berenice appears and sings an aria expressing her love for Scipio. The act ends with a chorus of soldiers singing a hymn to Mars, the Roman god of war. The second act takes place in Hasdrubal's palace. Berenice and Scipio meet secretly and sing a duet expressing their love for each other. Hasdrubal enters and confronts Scipio, but Scipio manages to escape. The act ends with a chorus of Carthaginians singing a hymn to their god Baal. The third act takes place on the battlefield. Scipio and Hasdrubal engage in a fierce battle, which Scipio ultimately wins. Berenice appears and sings an aria expressing her joy at Scipio's victory. The opera ends with a chorus of Romans singing a hymn to Jupiter, the king of the gods. Scipione nelle Spagne is characterized by Scarlatti's use of complex vocal lines and intricate harmonies. The opera features arias, duets, and choruses, all of which showcase Scarlatti's skill as a composer. The opera also features a variety of musical styles, including recitative, aria, and chorus. Scipione nelle Spagne premiered in Rome in 1714 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. The opera was later performed in other cities throughout Italy and Europe. Today, it is considered one of Scarlatti's most important works and is still performed by opera companies around the world.More....
