Georg Joseph Vogler, also known as Abbé Vogler, was a German composer, organist, and music theorist of the Classical era. He was born on June 15, 1749, in Würzburg, Germany, and died on May 6, 1814, in Darmstadt, Germany. Vogler was a prolific composer, and his works include operas, oratorios, chamber music, and keyboard music. One of his most famous works is the cantata "In allen meinen Taten." "In allen meinen Taten" is a sacred cantata for solo voice, choir, and orchestra. It was composed in 1782 and premiered in the same year in Mannheim, Germany. The cantata consists of six movements, and its text is based on a hymn by Paul Fleming. The movements are as follows: 1. Chorus: "In allen meinen Taten" - The cantata opens with a grand chorus in which the choir and orchestra proclaim the text "In allen meinen Taten lass ich den Höchsten raten" (In all my deeds, I let the Highest advise me). The music is majestic and uplifting, with a sense of confidence and trust in God. 2. Aria: "Ich will auf den Herren schauen" - The second movement is an aria for the solo voice, in which the singer expresses his or her desire to look to the Lord for guidance and strength. The music is serene and contemplative, with a gentle accompaniment from the orchestra. 3. Recitative: "Er wird mir keinen Schaden tun" - The third movement is a recitative for the solo voice, in which the singer affirms his or her faith in God's protection and care. The music is simple and straightforward, with a sense of assurance and trust. 4. Aria: "Er kann und will mich lassen nicht" - The fourth movement is another aria for the solo voice, in which the singer declares his or her confidence in God's unfailing love and support. The music is joyful and exuberant, with a lively accompaniment from the orchestra. 5. Recitative: "Er ist mein Hirt, der treue Gott" - The fifth movement is a recitative for the solo voice, in which the singer reflects on God's faithfulness and care, using the metaphor of a shepherd and his flock. The music is gentle and pastoral, with a sense of peace and security. 6. Chorale: "Gott ist mein Schutz und meine Macht" - The final movement is a chorale in which the choir and orchestra join together to affirm the text "Gott ist mein Schutz und meine Macht" (God is my protection and my strength). The music is triumphant and majestic, with a sense of gratitude and praise. Overall, "In allen meinen Taten" is a beautiful and uplifting work that expresses the composer's deep faith and trust in God. The music is characterized by its grandeur, serenity, and joyfulness, and it remains a beloved piece in the choral repertoire to this day.
