Il Mitridate Eupatore is an opera seria in three acts composed by Alessandro Scarlatti. The opera was composed in 1707 and premiered in Rome at the Teatro Capranica on January 26, 1707. The libretto was written by Girolamo Gigli and is based on the story of Mithridates VI, the king of Pontus. The plot of the opera revolves around the conflict between Mithridates VI and his two sons, Xiphares and Pharnaces. Mithridates has been away from his kingdom for many years, fighting wars and expanding his empire. During his absence, his two sons have grown up and become ambitious. Xiphares wants to rule the kingdom himself, while Pharnaces is more interested in reconciling with his father. When Mithridates returns to his kingdom, he is met with hostility from Xiphares, who accuses him of neglecting his duties as a father and a king. Mithridates is torn between his love for his sons and his duty to his kingdom. He tries to reconcile with Xiphares, but his efforts are in vain. Xiphares plots against his father and tries to assassinate him, but his plan is foiled by Pharnaces. In the end, Mithridates is able to reconcile with both of his sons and restore peace to his kingdom. The opera ends with a triumphant chorus celebrating the victory of love and reason over ambition and treachery. Il Mitridate Eupatore is characterized by Scarlatti's use of complex vocal lines and intricate harmonies. The opera features a number of virtuosic arias and duets, showcasing the vocal talents of the singers. The music is also notable for its use of orchestral color and dramatic contrasts. The opera was well-received at its premiere and went on to become one of Scarlatti's most popular works. It was performed throughout Italy and Europe in the 18th century and was revived in the 20th century by a number of opera companies. Today, Il Mitridate Eupatore is considered a masterpiece of the Baroque era and a testament to Scarlatti's skill as a composer.
