Girolamo Frescobaldi was an Italian composer and organist of the Baroque era. He was born in Ferrara in 1583 and died in Rome in 1643. He was one of the most important composers of keyboard music in the early Baroque period, and his works had a significant influence on the development of keyboard music in Italy and beyond. One of Frescobaldi's most famous works is the Fiori Musicali, a collection of organ music that was published in 1635. The collection consists of three parts: the Masses, the Hymns, and the Capriccios. Each part contains a number of pieces that are intended to be played during the various parts of the Catholic liturgy. The Tocata per l'Elevazione is the thirty-first piece in the Fiori Musicali, and it is intended to be played during the Elevation of the Host in the Catholic Mass. The Elevation is the moment when the priest raises the Host (the consecrated bread) and the Chalice (the consecrated wine) for the congregation to see. The Tocata per l'Elevazione is a short piece that is characterized by its simple, yet elegant melody and its use of ornamentation. The piece is in the key of F major and is written in a free, improvisatory style. It consists of a single movement that is divided into three sections. The first section begins with a simple, chordal melody that is played on the organ's manuals. The melody is then repeated with added ornamentation, including trills and mordents. The second section features a more elaborate melody that is played on the organ's pedals. The melody is again repeated with added ornamentation, including more complex trills and runs. The third section returns to the original melody, but this time it is played with even more ornamentation, including rapid arpeggios and virtuosic flourishes. Overall, the Tocata per l'Elevazione is a beautiful and expressive piece of music that showcases Frescobaldi's skill as a composer and organist. Its simple melody and use of ornamentation make it a perfect piece for the solemn and contemplative moment of the Elevation in the Catholic Mass.
