'Portrait parle' is a contemporary classical composition by Serbian-Canadian composer Ana Sokolovic. The piece was composed in 2011 and premiered on March 3, 2012, at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montreal, Canada. The composition consists of five movements, each of which is a musical portrait of a different person. The first movement, titled "Portrait de l'homme qui n'existe pas" (Portrait of the man who does not exist), is a portrait of an imaginary man. The second movement, "Portrait de la femme qui chante" (Portrait of the woman who sings), is a portrait of a woman who loves to sing. The third movement, "Portrait de l'homme au chapeau" (Portrait of the man in the hat), is a portrait of a man who always wears a hat. The fourth movement, "Portrait de la femme aux bijoux" (Portrait of the woman with jewelry), is a portrait of a woman who loves to wear jewelry. The final movement, "Portrait de l'homme au manteau rouge" (Portrait of the man in the red coat), is a portrait of a man who always wears a red coat. Each movement of 'Portrait parle' is characterized by its own unique musical language and style. The first movement is characterized by its use of percussive sounds and dissonant harmonies, while the second movement features a lyrical melody and a more tonal harmonic language. The third movement is characterized by its use of syncopated rhythms and a jazzy feel, while the fourth movement features a playful melody and a light, dance-like rhythm. The final movement is characterized by its use of repetitive patterns and a driving, energetic rhythm. Overall, 'Portrait parle' is a captivating and innovative composition that showcases Ana Sokolovic's unique musical voice and her ability to create vivid musical portraits of imaginary characters.
